Asi Gonia (Greek: Ασή Γωνιά) is a mountainous village and a former community in the eastern part of the Chania regional unit in Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Apokoronas, of which it is a municipal unit.[2] The municipal unit has an area of 18.273 km2 (7.055 sq mi).[3] Asi Gonia is situated east of the Lefka Ori mountain range, 20 km southwest of Rethymno. The communal office is situated in the heart of the community. In the village square there are two statues dedicated to the two Greek prime ministers Eleftherios Venizelos and Sofoklis Venizelos.

Αετοφωλιες Στην Κρητη
Eagles’s Nests in Crete
George Psychoudakis, most famous for “The Cretan Runner”, also wrote a book about the traditional customs and traditions of Asi Gonia in his book, “Αετοφωλιες Στην Κρητη”. This cultural anthropology is difficult to find and I treasure my copy.

Asi Gonia Names Project
Asi Gonia is the village of Anna Glentzaki Vavagiakis’ birth. We still have relatives living there and is a must visit for any of our stays in Crete. I am creating a database of all names from the birth registry of Asi Gonia. I intend to present the data in some hopefully interesting ways.
